Snellville secures contract for old police department

The Snellville Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has secured a $1.4 million contract for the old Snellville Police Department property. The Martin Companies of Loganville has purchased the property and intends to develop an office condominium complex consisting of 35 to 40 buildings on the 12-acre site.

After three unsuccessful attempts to sell the property through the governmental auction process, the city asked the DDA to assist in the effort to find a suitable developer. The property is located on U.S. Highway 78 between Fountain Drive and McGhee Road.

"Our mandate is to attract and secure viable businesses, and the sale of this property is one way we can do that," says Jimmy Norton, chairman of the Snellville Downtown Development Authority. "This will provide immediate and continuing resources to the city and spawn further quality development and redevelopment in the area. It also will generate jobs as well as interest in downtown Snellville and the Highway 78 Community Improvement District."

According to Martin J. Goldstein, president and managing director of The Martin Companies, plans for the site include a mix of professional and medical office condominiums, each with its own title and ownership.

"Each building will comprise approximately 2,200 square feet and have a residential look and feel," he says. Construction is expected to begin in three to five months.

In related news, the Snellville Town Center Banner Program is off to a good start, says Norton, who predicts that merchants and civic organizations will purchase the entire initial lot of 100 double-sided pole banners.

"It's a great way to brand our civic and business identity," he says.

The timing also is perfect as the city recently selected a new design for its official seal as well as a new Town Center logo.
