Move over Black Friday – the retail industry has a new best friend, and it's more about big sales and new backpacks than early dawn- openings and door prizes. The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that families with students in grades K-12 will spend more on back-to-school shopping this year. Between clothes, shoes, supplies and electronics, the average family will be spending $606.40 – up from $548.72 last year.

In these economic times, many companies have seen dips in sales.That hasn't been the case for Norcross-based Suniva, a manufacturer of high-efficiency silicon solar cells and modules. The company is sold-out through 2010 and is experiencing significant demand for its products both nationally and abroad."Last year, Suniva exported more than 90 percent of its product to Asia and Europe," said Bryan Ashley, Suniva's chief marketing officer. "In fact, Suniva outsources none of its production [and] is the only U.S. manufacturer of high-efficiency silicon solar cells that uses U.S. technology and U.S. production."

Around here, however, it can be hard to find an open road. The greater Atlanta area has become notorious for the opposite. According to Georgia Trend, congestion on Metro Atlanta roads and interstates costs the region $2 billion annually in lost time and excess fuel.

Sure, raising capital to start a small business in this economy is not easy, but that doesn't mean opportunities still don't exist. The key is knowing where to look.

Administration (SBA), which is available, among other things, to help entrepreneurs raise money for business projects.

"The SBA provides assistance through our loan guarantee programs," said Terri Denison, district director for the Georgia Small Business Administration. "Through these programs, small businesses are able to obtain financing they might not have been able to obtain through normal channels and/or receive financing on favorable terms."
